3/4 lighting
What is it?
3/4 lighting is an aesthetically pleasing and interesting method of lighting as it involved the soft / ambient lighting of only one direct and single source.
This can also be done outside during certain times of day, however the contrast and effect of 3/4 lighting is much stronger with controlled lighting.
I found that this lighting technique was tricky to get right and looking effective. The exposure that the camera picks up is dramatically different to how it looks to the naked eye. This makes it exceedingly difficult to get the perfect lighting and the perfect shot.
I found it interesting that some objects work much better with this technique than others, trying to photograph some stuffed animals and figurines was difficult as the light was not catching it in the right effect.
I am very happy with the body of work for 3/4 lighting, I though the objects worked really well to cast shadows and create contrast. The effect looks very good however some adjustment in the position of light to create a bigger contrast and more shadows would look more effective.
However I am not entirely happy with the results from the skull image, while it creates good contrast I thought it would look more effective with a black background.

I found this image to be my favourite by far.
The contrast of the image which catches the grain of the wood and the rough texture looks really effective. I love the texture which is displayed throughout the image and the dramatic contrast of the figurine. I also feel there is some type of emotion shown throughout the position the figure is in. The crossed arms and deeper contrast creates an intriguing scene. |
